Khalilzad: Calling Pakistan “Phenomenal Partner” is Exaggeration

DIDPress: Reacting to recent remarks of the commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), former U.S. envoy for Afghanistan peace process, Zalmay Khalilzad, criticized Pakistan’s role in counterterrorism, describing it “ambiguous”.

In a post on X social media platform, Khalilzad questioned the statements made by General Michael Kurilla, who had recently described Pakistan as an “phenomenal partner” in the fight against terrorism during a congressional hearing.

“…a slight exaggeration. While there are instances of Pakistani cooperation,  at the same time they are limiting our counter terror operations even as hundreds of ISIS operatives are active in their country,” said Khalilzad.

He emphasized that Pakistan’s military exhibits a dual role—at times appearing as a U.S. partner, and at other times acting as an obstacle to anti-terror efforts.

Khalilzad also pointed out that Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, was found and killed in Pakistan—an incident that remains one of the most controversial aspects of U.S.-Pakistan relations.
