Russia’s Response to U.S Attack Against Iran: Regional and Global Security Under Threat

DIDPress: Russia’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning the U.S. violation of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s territory, warning that a “new and dangerous phase of escalation” has begun, further jeopardizing regional and global security.

“Russia unequivocally condemns the U.S. airstrikes on multiple nuclear facilities in Iran in the early hours of June 22, following Israel’s attacks against the Islamic Republic,” reads the statement.

Moscow asserted that “the irresponsible decision to target the territory of a sovereign state with bombs and missile strikes—regardless of justification—constitutes a blatant violation of international law, the UN Charter, and UN Security Council resolutions, which have explicitly prohibited such actions.” It expressed grave concern that these attacks were carried out by “a permanent member of the UN Security Council.”

The ministry emphasized that “the consequences of these strikes, including potential radiological impacts, must be assessed.” However, it warned that “it is already clear that a perilous new cycle of escalation has begun, threatening to further destabilize regional and global security.” The risk of conflict spreading across the Middle East—a region already grappling with multiple crises—has “increased dramatically.”

Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime Undermined
The statement highlighted another critical concern: “The attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities has severely damaged the global nuclear non-proliferation regime, which is founded on the Treaty of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).” It argued that the strikes “have dealt a major blow to the credibility of the NPT and the verification and monitoring system of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).”

Russia called on the IAEA’s leadership to “respond professionally, swiftly, and transparently—without hiding behind vague language or claims of political ‘neutrality.’” It demanded that “an impartial report by the IAEA Director General be reviewed at a special session of the agency, to be convened at the earliest possible time.”

Urgent Call for UN Action
The Foreign Ministry stressed that “the UN Security Council must address this issue,” urging the international community to “collectively condemn the provocative actions of the United States and Israel.”

“We demand an immediate halt to these aggressive acts and intensified efforts to restore stability through political and diplomatic channels,” concludes the statement.
