U.S House of Representatives Blocks Financial Aid to Taliban Caretaker Government

DIDPress: U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill by a majority vote aimed at completely cutting off all financial transfers to the Taliban’s caretaker government in Afghanistan.

The bill, introduced by Republican Congressman Tim Burchett of Tennessee and supported by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast, was approved following revelations that Biden administration had indirectly channeled millions of dollars to the Taliban after the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

“This bill makes sure not a single penny of American taxpayer money ends up in the hands of the Taliban—not directly, not through back doors, and not via weak-willed foreign governments or shady NGOs,” Chairman Mast said. “If you’re funding the Taliban, you’re no friend of the United States.”

The action comes after a report from the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) disclosed that the Taliban had received over $10 million just through tax revenues – a figure confirmed by Secretary of State Antony Blinken during December 2024 congressional testimony.

Republican lawmakers hope this new bill will permanently stop the flow of U.S. funds to the Taliban’s caretaker administration.
