Six-Month Residency Extension Proposed for Afghan Refugees in Pakistan

DIDPress: A proposal to extend the legal residency of Afghan refugees holding Proof of Registration (PoR) cards by six months has been submitted to Pakistan’s federal cabinet for approval.

Pakistani media, citing official sources, reported that a high-level meeting was held to review the repatriation process of Afghan refugees with PoR cards. The meeting included representatives from several Pakistani ministries.

During the discussions, officials evaluated options to extend the legal stay of PoR cardholders for three to six months, with the six-month extension proposal being formally recommended to the cabinet.

Authorities emphasized that many Afghan refugees were born in Pakistan and currently own businesses and property in the country. They argued that these individuals require additional time to liquidate assets and wind down commercial activities—a key justification for the proposed extension.
