UN General Assembly to Hold Special Session on Afghanistan

DIDPress: UN General Assembly will hold a special session to address the crisis in Afghanistan and support human rights, particularly the rights of women and girls.

Nasir Ahmad Faiq, Chargé d’Affaires of Afghanistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN, announced that the UN General Assembly will hold a special session today, Monday (July 7), to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Faiq said that participating countries will examine the repercussions of Afghanistan’s crisis on global peace and security.

He hoped the Assembly would adopt a resolution in support of the Afghan people, especially women.

According to Faiq, the resolution will reaffirm the international community’s commitment to the rights, dignity, and aspirations of the Afghanistan people, stressing the urgent need to protect women and girls in Afghanistan.

He underlined that UN member states are united in their stance toward a peaceful and inclusive future for Afghanistan.

The session is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. New York time.

This marks the second high-level UN meeting on Afghanistan in the past two weeks.

Previously, the UN Security Council held a special session on June 22 to address the worsening humanitarian and political crisis in Afghanistan.
