Qatar: We will continue to provide mediation support to Afghanistan

DIDPress: Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations says his country will continue its mediation efforts to help Afghanistan. “The aim of these efforts is to address the challenges facing Afghanistan on the path to peace and stability,” Alia Ahmad bin Saif Al Thani said.

He added that the Qatari government is seeking to fully return Afghanistan to the international community by hosting the UN-led Doha Process meetings.

Ms. Al Thani also stressed that Qatar’s foreign policy has always focused on the peaceful resolution of crises, especially through mediation, and that this approach is rooted in the country’s successful experiences in the field of regional and international mediation.

Qatar has recently brokered a new agreement between the Taliban government and the German government. Under the agreement, the Taliban are allowed to send two diplomats to Germany, and in return, the German government will speed up the deportation of Afghan refugees.

On Monday, Taliban acting foreign minister Amir Khan Mottaki called Qatar’s foreign minister Mohammed bin Abdulaziz al-Khalifi to thank Qatar for its key role in the agreement.

Qatar is one of the Taliban’s closest political partners and has played a key role in the group’s previous talks with the United States and the former Afghan government. The talks, held in Doha, led to a 2020 peace deal between the Taliban and the United States.

Qatar also played a facilitating role in the release of some prisoners and the visit of the US delegation to Kabul.

The Taliban have also always referred to Qatar as a credible mediator and trusted partner that has played a constructive role in providing the ground for dialogue and interaction with the world.
