German ambassador: Interaction with Taliban does not mean formal recognition

DIDPress: The German ambassador to Canada stressed at the Kabul-NATO talks that Berlin does not recognize the interim government as a legitimate government and that engagement with the group does not mean officially recognizing them.

German Ambassador to Canada Matthias Lutenberg said during the Kabul-NATO talks in the Canadian parliament that the Berlin government does not recognize the Taliban’s interim government as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.

He added that engagement with the caretaker government should not be mistaken for official identification of the group.

Referring to the current challenges in Afghanistan and the humanitarian situation in the country, Lutenberg stressed that any dialogue or interaction with the interim government should be aimed at improving the human rights situation and meeting the basic needs of the Afghan people.

He also stressed that Germany will continue to engage with the international community to achieve these goals.
