Hundreds of Thousands Take to Sydney Streets in Support of Palestine

DID Press: In what is being described as one of the largest pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Australian history, hundreds of thousands of people marched through central Sydney on Sunday to express solidarity with the people of Gaza and to protest against Israeli military actions. Despite torrential rain, the demonstration began in Lang Park and stretched across the 1.2-kilometre Sydney Harbour Bridge. Organizers estimated attendance at nearly 300,000, while New South Wales Police initially put the figure between 90,000 and 100,000.

The march had been authorized by the High Court, but was halted midway by law enforcement. Police deployed riot control units and heavy vehicles to block the route, and a mass text message was sent to participants instructing them to disperse and return.

Among those present were prominent figures including Julian Assange, former New South Wales Premier Bob Carr, and federal cabinet minister Ed Husic. A senior NSW police official described the scale of the crowd as “unprecedented” in his years of service.

Chanting slogans such as “Stop the genocide,” protesters called on the Australian government to impose sanctions on Israel and take a firm diplomatic stance in support of Palestinian rights.

The demonstration comes amid growing international outrage over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, as civilian casualties continue to mount.
