UK PM Urges Police Transparency on Afghanistani Asylum Seeker Rape Case

DID Press: UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called on the police to be “as transparent as possible” about the ethnicity of two Afghananistani asylum seekers accused of raping a 12‑year‑old girl in Nuneaton, following mounting political pressure for greater disclosure.

The suspects were arrested last week, sparking demands from Reform UK leader Nigel Farage for the release of their identities and ethnic backgrounds. Speaking at a press conference on Monday (4 August), Farage criticized police for withholding information, warning that secrecy could undermine public trust, fuel conspiracy theories, and even provoke civil unrest — citing last year’s riots in Southport as an example.

In his response, Starmer stressed that while police must operate within the law, they should release ethnicity‑related details in sensitive cases where public concern is high.

Human rights organizations have cautioned that such disclosures before a court verdict could inflame anti‑immigration and racist sentiment, potentially leading to violence.

The case remains under active investigation, and judicial authorities have not released any additional details
