Japan Marks 80th Anniversary of Nagasaki Atomic Bombing with Solemn Silence

DID Press: Eight decades after the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki city, Japan on Friday honored the victims in a solemn ceremony.

The bombing of August 9, 1945 claimed more than 74,000 lives, while countless others suffered long-term illness and death from the devastating effects of nuclear radiation.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and the Mayor of Nagasaki joined thousands of attendees in observing a one-minute silence, paying tribute to those who perished.

The commemoration stands as a poignant reminder of one of the twentieth century’s greatest tragedies — an event that brought World War II to a close yet left enduring human and historical scars on Japan’s collective memory
