Kabul Housing Crisis: Mass Demolitions to Rising Migration, Taxes

DID Press: Over the past four years, the demolition of approximately 40,000 houses in Kabul for road expansion, combined with large-scale migration from southern and western provinces to the capital, has severely strained the city’s housing market.

In addition, higher taxes on rental and property sales, the mass return of migrants from Iran and Pakistan, and the influx of people into urban areas in search of work have made it increasingly difficult to find rental housing in Kabul and provincial capitals.

Meanwhile, the complicated process of obtaining permits for new housing construction has further exacerbated these challenges
