Riyadh Driving Lebanon’s Crisis; Saudis Seek Hezbollah’s Disarmament

DID Press: Al-Khandaq analytical website wrote that Lebanon once again stands on the brink of a serious crisis, stressing that the recent political turmoil over the weapons of the resistance stems from foreign meddling, not the people’s will.

The report underscores Saudi Arabia’s central role, noting that Riyadh, while speaking of “supporting the state” and “strengthening sovereignty,” has weaponized its political and media influence and exploited Lebanon’s economic collapse to pursue its real aim: stripping Hezbollah of its weapons.

According to Al-Khandaq, Saudi envoy Yazid bin Farhan has empowered anti-Hezbollah factions and pressured Lebanese institutions, pushing the government into rash decisions on the resistance’s arms. These Saudi actions, it warns, not only fuel domestic divisions but, with the involvement of outside players such as Israel and Syria, could complete a political, media, financial, and even military siege of Hezbollah.

The report further said that Riyadh’s goals include weakening Iran’s influence in the region, securing Israel’s northern front, and restoring Sunni leadership in Lebanon.

Al-Khandaq stressed that the current tensions cannot be understood without recognizing Saudi Arabia’s driving role, adding that Lebanon’s future must not be held hostage to foreign ambitions. It argued that the Lebanese people deserve a government that prioritizes social cohesion, economic stability, and real sovereignty—not one molded under Saudi pressure.
