Asphalting Mahirud–Farah Road Resumes after 17 Years

DID Press: After 17 years of suspension, Asphalting work has resumed on the 120-kilometer Mahirud–Farah road, a strategic route providing shortest and safest commercial corridor between Iran and Afghanistan. The route is expected to reduce transit distance by 400 kilometers, potentially cutting transportation time and costs by half.

The project, now over 90% complete, is a priority for Iran’s 14th government, with a target completion date by the end of 1404 in the Iranian calendar.

In addition to facilitating bilateral trade, the road will connect to Afghanistan’s ring highway, creating a shorter and more competitive route for exporting Iranian goods to Central Asia.

Completion of the project is crucial for economic development in border regions, employment, and enhancing regional security. However, challenges remain, including securing the remaining funding, coordinating execution between Iran and Afghanistan, and managing security and natural obstacles, which require careful oversight.
