Poll: Lack of Transparency in Mining Contracts Public’s Top Concern

DID Press: The findings show majority of Afghanistan citizens are concerned by the lack of transparency in mining contracts, raising red flags over corruption, misuse of resources, and the exclusion of public interests.

In its latest nationwide online poll, DID Press explored public concerns over the Taliban caretaker government’s management of Afghanistan’s mining sector.

According to the poll, 57% of respondents cited lack of transparency as the most serious threat in mining sector. Many believe that without clear, accountable systems, there is a heightened risk of corruption and misappropriation of natural wealth, ultimately depriving Afghanistan people of their legitimate share in the country’s mineral revenues.

In second place, 29% of participants pointed to the political use of mining income and power consolidation as a key challenge. Respondents expressed concern that mining revenues are being diverted to strengthen the Taliban’s hold on power, rather than being invested in infrastructure, healthcare, or education.

Meanwhile, 14% of those surveyed identified the disregard for local communities’ needs as a major worry. They argued that in many cases, the voices of local populations are ignored, and communities see few, if any, benefits from nearby mining activities.

A striking finding of the poll is that none of the respondents (0%) mentioned environmental damage as a primary concern. Analysts say this reflects a national mood dominated by economic and political instability, where environmental considerations take a back seat to more immediate fears.

Experts emphasize that without transparent oversight and meaningful public participation, Afghanistan’s vast natural resources will continue to be exploited without contributing to long-term development or national prosperity.
