“Peace and Freedom” Movement Formed in US to Oppose Taliban Rule

DID Press: A group of Afghanistani political and civil society activists in the United States have launched a movement called Peace and Freedom aimed at countering Taliban rule through nonviolent political struggle and raising awareness of the human rights situation in Afghanistan.

The movement was formally announced on Saturday, September 6, by Afghanistani activists, who said their goal is to amplify the voice of opposition forces and pursue peaceful, political resistance to the Taliban’s caretaker administration.

According to its members, the movement’s core agenda includes raising awareness about Afghanistan’s current situation, documenting human rights violations under Taliban rule, and mobilizing youth against the group. Plans are also underway to establish branches in Iran and Germany in the near future.

The announcement comes amid a wave of political initiatives abroad since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021. Several exile-based parties and organizations have been formed to oppose the group, though none have yet achieved a tangible shift in Afghanistan’s political landscape. In recent months alone, three new opposition platforms have emerged: National Justice Party of Afghanistan in Turkey, the International Criminal Justice Foundation in Hague, and Afghanistan Green Party in Exile in Paris.

Leaders of these movements say their shared objective is to wage civil and political resistance against Taliban rule while promoting democracy, social justice, and peace in Afghanistan.
