Poll: Dialogue Between Shia-Sunni Scholars and Promoting Coexistence, Top Demands in Unity Week
DID Press: A new survey conducted by DID Press revealed that the majority of respondents view “constructive dialogue between Shia and Sunni scholars” and “promotion of religious teachings on coexistence and fraternity” as the key initiatives for Unity Week. Each of these approaches received 40% of the votes, while joint cultural and social programs ranked second with 20%. Notably, focus on shared issues of the Muslim Ummah, such as Palestine, received no votes.

The poll data indicate that, for many people, Unity Week is primarily seen as an opportunity for direct dialogue among religious leaders and for emphasizing the principles of peaceful coexistence. These two priorities, each supported by 40% of participants, were identified as key steps toward fostering closer relations between Islamic sects.
This trend suggests that society places greater value on direct engagement between clerics and highlighting common religious values over symbolic gestures. Religious experts also stress that such dialogues can help reduce misunderstandings, bridge sectarian divides, and strengthen social cohesion within Muslim communities.
Although joint cultural and social programs ranked third with 20% of the votes, they were still recognized as practical tools for bringing communities together. Initiatives such as conferences, exhibitions, artistic gatherings, and volunteer activities can help spread the message of unity in tangible ways across different segments of society.
Interestingly, the poll found that no respondents prioritized international issues such as Palestine during Unity Week. Participants viewed this as a reflection of the urgent need to address domestic challenges and interfaith coexistence, while noting that, although the Palestinian cause remains globally significant, the focus of Unity Week should be on strengthening internal solidarity.
Overall, the results suggest that the public expects Unity Week to serve as a platform for genuine and constructive dialogue among Islamic sects, moving beyond slogans and symbolic gestures. Promoting coexistence and Islamic brotherhood, respondents believe, not only solidify Shia-Sunni relations within Afghanistan but also send a positive message to Muslim societies worldwide.
