EU: Stability in Afghanistan Achievable Only Through Inclusive Political Process

DID Press: European Union condemned widespread human rights violations in Afghanistan, warning that Taliban acting government’s policies and restrictions on women and girls constitute “crimes against humanity.” The EU emphasized that lasting stability in Afghanistan is possible only through an inclusive political process that ensures equal participation of all segments of society.

The statement noted that Afghanistan women and girls have suffered the most from the Taliban’s restrictions and policies.

EU also called for protection of the rights of ethnic and religious minorities.

It stressed that sustainable peace and stability in Afghanistan requires an Afghan-led, inclusive political process with full, equal, and meaningful participation of women and representation of all societal groups.

Supporting the work of the UN Special Rapporteur, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), the EU once again urged the Taliban’s acting government to adhere to Afghanistan’s international human rights obligations, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
