Nepal’s PM Resigns amid Deadly Protests

DID Press: One day after widespread protests in Nepal’s capital left at least 19 people dead, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday, September 9. Several ministers and lawmakers also stepped down alongside him.

The demonstrations, initially sparked by concerns over organized corruption, turned violent as protesters attacked government buildings and houses of political leaders, including the prime minister’s residence. Security forces fired on the crowd to disperse them, resulting in numerous casualties.

Despite the resignation of the PM and members of his cabinet, the protests show no sign of abating, with demonstrators insisting to remain on the streets.

Political analysts warn the ongoing crisis may push Nepal into a new phase of political instability.
