UK Envoy Voices Concern Over Taliban’s Suppression of Afghanistani Women
DID Press: United Kingdom’s representative to the UN Human Rights Council has expressed concern over mounting restrictions on women in Afghanistan and urged the Taliban’s acting government to lift its bans on women’s rights.

Speaking at the Council’s 60th session, Eleanor Sanders, the UK envoy, highlighted growing reports of women being flogged, detained, and subjected to restrictions under the pretext of enforcing Islamic dress codes. She called for the immediate repeal of such measures.
Sanders also reaffirmed Britain’s support for the UN Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, stressing that the international community must not remain indifferent to the ongoing violations of women’s rights.
In addition, she announced a £1 million aid package from London for earthquake victims in Kunar province, reiterating that the UK remains committed to standing alongside the Afghan people.
