European Commission to Impose New Sanctions on Israel

DID Press: In response to the escalation of Israel’s aggression against Gaza, the European Union plans to impose sanctions on the regime, suspending certain bilateral trade agreements.

Reuters, quoting Paula Pinho, spokesperson for the European Commission, reported: “Tomorrow, the Commissioners will approve a package of measures against Israel, specifically a proposal to suspend certain trade provisions in agreements between the European Union and Israel.”

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced last Wednesday that she would seek sanctions against Israel’s “extremist” ministers and efforts to limit trade relations due to the situation in Gaza, warning that famine cannot be used as a “weapon of war.”

In a speech to the European Parliament, she expressed regret that disagreements among member states have hindered a unified EU response and added that the Commission she leads “will do everything it can on its own.”

Von der Leyen said: “What is happening in Gaza has shaken the conscience of the world. People are dying while begging for food. Mothers hold their lifeless infants in their arms. These images are truly catastrophic. For the sake of children, for the sake of humanity – this must stop.”

The 66-year-old German politician emphasized that the Commission will halt its bilateral support for Israel and suspend all payments.

The European Commission will also propose sanctions against “extremist ministers” whose actions and statements are considered “incitement to violence,” as well as against “violent settlers.”

Additionally, the Commission will seek to advance the suspension of parts of the EU-Israel partnership agreement in trade-related matters.
