Afghanistan Consulate Staff in Bonn Resign Over Taliban Appointment

DID Press: The acting head and entire staff of the Afghanistan Consulate General in Bonn, Germany, have collectively resigned in protest over the German government’s decision to hand over consular authority to diplomats representing the Taliban administration.

In a video statement, Hamed Nangiali Kabiri, the acting consul general, announced that he and all consulate employees were stepping down following Berlin’s approval of two Taliban-appointed diplomats to assume control of the mission.

Kabiri emphasized that since the Taliban’s return to power, the Bonn consulate had operated independently and had never shared citizens’ documents with what he referred to as the “illegitimate Taliban group.”

He stated that all official documents and assets of the consulate would be handed over to Germany’s Federal Foreign Office. According to Kabiri, one of the Taliban envoys is expected to take over leadership of the diplomatic post.

In a joint statement, the resigning staff condemned the decision as a betrayal of human rights principles, particularly those related to women’s and children’s education and fundamental freedoms. They asserted that the Taliban does not represent the will of the Afghan people and expressed hope for a future in which Afghanistan would be governed by a legitimate, inclusive system.
