Balkh–Herat Railway: Afghanistan’s Major Step Toward Regional Connectivity

DID Press: Afghanistan has taken a significant step toward becoming a regional transit hub with the ongoing construction of 561-kilometer Balkh–Herat railway, one of the country’s largest infrastructure projects.

The railway will connect Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan with Herat in the west, linking key economic regions and strengthening the country’s position as a vital trade corridor between Central Asia and the Indian Ocean.

Officials say the project is expected to boost Afghanistan’s economy, create employment opportunities, and open new routes for exports and imports.

Balkh–Herat railway is viewed as a strategic initiative aimed at ending Afghanistan’s isolation as a landlocked nation and transforming it into a crossroads of regional commerce and connectivity.
