Taliban Governors, Mayors Meet in Kandahar Amid Speculation Over Bagram
DID Press: Taliban governors and mayors have convened in Kandahar for what officials describe as a three-day administrative seminar. However, informed sources suggest that discussions may also involve the status of Bagram Air Base and internal security coordination.

According to Taliban authorities, the gathering aims to train provincial and municipal officials on administrative duties, the enforcement of laws, and proper conduct toward the public. The event includes several speeches on governance and social responsibility.
Nevertheless, multiple media sources report that the meeting is, in fact, a high-level security conference attended by around 400 mayors and 34 provincial governors under the leadership of Taliban supreme leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada. The discussions reportedly center on the situation surrounding Bagram Air Base and efforts to strengthen coordination between local administrations.
Akhundzada is expected to address participants on the final day, outlining the Taliban government’s future political and military plans. Sources close to the Taliban leadership said earlier that Akhundzada had summoned senior officials to Kandahar specifically to discuss Bagram and instructed all top members to attend.
The development comes after U.S. President Donald Trump, during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, announced his intention to “reclaim” Bagram Air Base. Trump later warned on his social media platform Truth Social that “bad things will happen” if the Taliban refuse to cooperate.
In response, Taliban officials urged Trump to “act rationally” and avoid repeating the failures of past U.S. military interventions in Afghanistan.
