NYT: Afghanistan Safe Havens Driving Surge in TTP Attacks

DID Press: New York Times has reported a sharp surge in attacks by Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claiming that the group has intensified its operations using safe havens inside Afghanistan with the support of Afghan Taliban.

According to the report by journalist Zia ur-Rehman, the recent wave of violence in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan provinces marks one of the bloodiest and most destabilizing periods of unrest in the past decade, posing a serious challenge to the country’s security forces.

NYT cited Pakistani security officials, saying that since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, TTP leaders and fighters have not only avoided arrest or persecution but have also benefited from logistical, military, and intelligence support.

As a result, terrorist operations in Pakistan—particularly suicide bombings targeting military forces and government facilities—have significantly escalated.

The report highlights that Islamabad now faces a deep security and diplomatic dilemma: while formal relations with the Taliban-led government in Kabul prevent direct military action against cross-border sanctuaries, domestic pressure to curb the violence is rapidly growing.

According to the New York Times, Pakistan’s future stability hinges on its ability to strike a difficult balance between diplomatic considerations, internal security demands, and mounting international pressure.
