Over 2 300 Nominated for Parliamentary Election, Women Presence Mild: IEC Chief

The election commission announced Wednesday that more than 6 million and 184 thousand people have registered themselves since the beginning of Voter Registration process for October 20 election across the country.
The statistics released while the public presence at registration centers is still a serious concern.
“2 Million and 11 thousand are women from the 6 million and 180 thousand people registered for the election,” said the chairman of election commission Abdul Bade Sayyad at a news conference in Kabul on Wednesday 13 June.

Mr. Sayyad stated the first and second levels of registration process were successful and the third stage of the registration in the villages underway.
“1,000 registration centers that were not active in the past stages were transferred to the third stage,” he added. “Registration of candidates for the House Representatives is over”.

The election commission said 2396 people, including 1981 men and 381 women, were registered with the commission as potential candidates for the House of Representatives.

In addition, the Election Commission said that 3058 other candidates have been registered as potential candidates for district councils, only 207 are women out of this figure.

Mr Sayyad expressed concerns over the lack of women’s presence in the District Councils registration process. He considered insecurity, in some provinces, cultural problems, illiteracy and the attitude of some local officials as the main factors behind the lack of presence of women for the candidacy of District Councils.

The initial list of candidates for the House of Representatives and district councils is scheduled to be announced on 28 June after reviewing their documents.
