Taliban Request to Change Flag and Name of Embassy in Berlin

DID Press: Representatives of Taliban government have requested permission to raise their flag over Afghanistan Embassy in Berlin, a move that has met strong opposition from Germany’s armed forces and several political parties, according to reports.

Taliban intend to replace the flag of former Islamic Republic of Afghanistan with their own emblem and to rename the mission from the “Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan” to simply the “Embassy of Afghanistan.”

The request has drawn criticism from German lawmakers and military officials, who view the move as a step toward de facto recognition of the Taliban authorities.

In response to mounting criticism, German Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its position, saying: “We have made it clear to the Afghan side that we expect the embassy to continue using the titles and symbols of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.”
