Kabul, Islamabad Agree to Ceasefire Mediated by Qatar

DID Press: Following several rounds of negotiations between Afghan and Pakistani officials in Doha, the government of Qatar announced early Sunday (October 19) that the two countries have reached an agreement on an immediate ceasefire — a deal aimed at easing border tensions and paving the way for lasting peace in the region.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced early Sunday that after multiple rounds of talks between the Afghan and Pakistani delegations in Doha, both sides agreed to implement an immediate ceasefire.

The statement added that the two countries also agreed to hold follow-up meetings in the coming weeks to monitor and ensure the durability of the ceasefire. Doha expressed hope that this agreement would serve as an effective step toward reducing border tensions and establishing a solid foundation for sustainable peace in South Asia.

Pakistan’s Defense Minister, Khawaja Asif, confirmed the agreement and announced that the next meeting to discuss the implementation of the ceasefire will take place on October 25 in Istanbul. He added, “With the implementation of this agreement, it is expected that terrorist attacks from Afghan soil into Pakistan will immediately come to an end.”

This agreement was reached amid recent border clashes between Pakistani forces and the Taliban in Afghanistan’s southern provinces, including Kandahar and Paktika, which had significantly escalated tensions between the two neighboring countries.
