EU: Inclusive Government and Lasting Peace Only Path for Afghanistan

DID press: European Union’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Gilles Bertrand, said following his week-long visit to Afghanistan that the EU views a multilateral process as the only viable path to address the international community’s shared concerns over Afghanistan’s adherence to global commitments and its progress toward an inclusive government and lasting peace.

In a statement, the EU said Bertrand reaffirmed during his visit that the Union’s engagement with Afghanistan is based on “principles, realism, and a people-centered approach.”

The statement added that the EU aims to work with all Afghanistani stakeholders who aspire to build a peaceful, inclusive, and self-reliant Afghanistan.

Bertrand also noted his intention to return regularly to Afghanistan and the wider region to engage with all relevant actors and stakeholders in support of inclusive dialogue and sustainable peace.
