IRC Warns Afghanistan may Lose 10% of GDP amid Aid Cuts

DID Press: International Rescue Committee (IRC) has warned that Afghanistan may lose up to 10 percent of its gross domestic product due to declining global aid, further straining the country’s fragile economy and humanitarian situation.

The IRC report highlighted that funding for climate-related programs in Afghanistan has fallen by 40 percent, even as the country faces severe droughts and other climate-driven crises. The aid reduction disproportionately affects vulnerable nations like Afghanistan, while more climate-stable countries receive greater financial support.

So far, the IRC has provided cash assistance to 28,000 Afghan families to help cope with the impacts of climate change. However, the organization said existing humanitarian efforts are insufficient and urged the international community to act urgently.

The report was released ahead of the Berlin Climate Security Conference, where the IRC called on participating countries to take immediate measures to support at-risk communities, particularly in Afghanistan.
