Taliban Begins Issuing New ID Cards for Afghanistani Migrants in Iran

DID Press: As part of ongoing joint efforts between Iran and Afghanistan to organize the status of Afghanistani migrants, technical teams from the Taliban authorities have arrived in Mashhad and Zahedan to begin issuing three-year identity cards for Afghanistani nationals living in Iran.

The Taliban-run National Statistics and Information Authority announced that, for the first time, its teams have been deployed to the Iranian cities of Mashhad and Zahedan to verify the identities of Afghanistani migrants and issue three-year identity cards.

According to official Taliban sources, the teams are operating under the Identity Verification and Documentation Directorate and are responsible for reviewing documents and recording biometric and identity information of Afghanistani migrants residing in Iran.

Under the new program, eligible migrants will receive special identity cards valid for three years upon completion of the verification process.

Officials from the National Statistics and Information Authority say these cards will help address key challenges faced by migrants, including access to education, school enrollment for children, and obtaining Afghanistani passports.

It has also been announced that the Islamic Republic of Iran will issue official residency documents to card-holders based on this verification process.

This initiative follows a recent visit to Iran by a Taliban delegation led by Mohammad Nabi Nusrat, acting head of Afghanistan’s Civil Registration Authority. The purpose of the visit was to assess migrant conditions, improve coordination, and facilitate the identification process for Afghanistani nationals.

According to Taliban officials, a similar team will soon begin operating in Tehran as part of the next phase, allowing identity verification procedures to be carried out in a centralized manner across different regions of Iran.
