UN Warns of Humanitarian Catastrophe in Al-Fasher, Sudan

DID Press: The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warned that Al-Fasher city in Sudan is facing one of the most severe humanitarian crisis in recent years. According to the agency, hundreds of civilians, including women and children, have been killed or injured in organized attacks over the past ten days, while thousands more remain trapped amid ongoing violence.

Al Jazeera reported that the UN human rights office, in a recent statement, described Al-Fasher—the capital of North Darfur state—as being engulfed in widespread violence and brutal assaults of “unimaginable scale.” The city is described as “steeped in grief,” with civilians systematically targeted, endangering both their lives and human dignity.

Preliminary data indicates that hundreds, including women, children, and the elderly, have died in these attacks, while many of the wounded are being treated in temporary medical facilities. Meanwhile, thousands of residents, including medical staff, aid workers, and journalists, have been detained or gone missing.

The statement emphasized that there are no safe exit routes from Al-Fasher, leaving those who remain at high risk of death or detention. The UN warned: “What is happening in Al-Fasher is not chaos, but an organized assault on human life and dignity.”

The OHCHR also reported incidents of ethnic clashes in different areas of Al-Fasher and noted that, despite communication blackouts and field access challenges, its teams continue documenting human rights violations.

The UN has called on the international community to create safe corridors, ensure the immediate protection of civilians, and guarantee unhindered humanitarian access. The statement concluded: “Al-Fasher is bleeding, and the world must act now to halt the violence and support its people. Accountability and punishment of perpetrators is the only way to prevent the recurrence of such horrific atrocities.”
