Pakistan Warns Taliban of Int’l Accountability Over Human Rights Violations

DID Press: As tensions between Kabul and Islamabad escalate, Asif Durrani, former Pakistani special envoy to Afghanistan, warned that the Taliban could face international legal action for human rights violations and support for terrorism, citing the continuing validity of UN Security Council resolutions.

Durrani, a veteran Pakistani diplomat, said on X on Wednesday, (Nov. 26), that the Taliban cannot escape international pressure and that existing Security Council resolutions remain in effect.

“UN Security Council resolutions remain in force against the Taliban; they can be held legally accountable for human rights abuses and support for terrorism,” Durrani wrote.

The warning comes amid rising tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan in recent months. On Monday, (Nov.24), the Pakistani military conducted airstrikes on positions in Khost, Kunar, and Paktika provinces, killing at least 10 civilians—including nine children and one woman—and injuring several others.

Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Taliban of sheltering anti-Pakistan militant groups, particularly the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and overlooking their activities. The Taliban have rejected these claims and accused Pakistan of interfering in Afghanistan’s internal affairs.

Political analysts say Durrani’s warning reflects Islamabad’s growing security concerns over Taliban policies. Highlighting Security Council resolutions may also indicate Pakistan’s effort to rally international support and increase diplomatic pressure on the group.

Experts add that while the Taliban seek international legitimacy, such warnings could undermine their standing and potentially pave the way for new UN Security Council actions or regional measures against them.
