Iran Offers “Blank Cheque” to Mediate Between Islamabad, Kabul, New Delhi

DID Press: Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, announced during an official visit to Islamabad that Tehran is prepared to provide Pakistan with a “blank cheque” to help resolve its tensions with Afghanistan and India. He emphasized that Pakistan holds a place of respect among the Iranian people and that security and regional cooperation between the two countries remain a priority.

Speaking with a Pakistani journalist in Islamabad, Larijani said Iran is ready to play an active and effective role in resolving Pakistan’s disputes with Afghanistan and India. He said that Iran is willing to offer Pakistan a “blank cheque” in this process for Islamabad to use whenever necessary.

Larijani, who traveled to Pakistan on an official visit, has already held meetings with senior Pakistani officials. In his meeting with General Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Army Chief, both sides agreed to strengthen coordination in combating terrorism, securing borders, and promoting regional stability. Pakistani media have reported that Tehran and Islamabad consider security cooperation their “top priority.”

In recent months, Iran has repeatedly expressed readiness to mediate between the Taliban and Pakistan. Earlier, Mohammad Reza Bahrami, Director General for South Asia at Iran’s Foreign Ministry, conveyed Tehran’s concerns over rising tensions during a meeting with Abdul Kabir, the Taliban government’s Minister for Refugees, and offered Iran’s support in easing hostilities and establishing channels of dialogue between the two sides.

During this visit, Larijani also met with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari. In these discussions, the two sides exchanged views on maintaining regional stability, enhancing security cooperation, and managing border crises.

These statements come at a time when Pakistan’s relations with the Taliban government have faced serious strain in recent months due to border clashes and airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan. Tehran says it is ready to use its diplomatic resources to help de-escalate tensions and establish a sustainable mechanism for dialogue.
