Kabul, Dushanbe Seeking New Border Framework

DID Press: In a fresh effort by Afghanistan’s caretaker government to expand ties with Central Asia, a high-level delegation has been sent to Tajikistan to discuss border-crossing management and security coordination with Tajik officials.

A Taliban delegation led by Mohammad Ismail Ghaznawi, the governor of Badakhshan province, traveled to Tajikistan for talks with senior officials on strengthening border order and enhancing security cooperation. Abdul Manan Hassan, the deputy military chief of the Taliban border police, is also part of the delegation.

According to Abdullah Oqab, spokesperson for the Taliban’s border police, the delegation met with Mukhtar Badakhshan, the governor of Tajikistan’s Kuhistan region, the deputy head of national border security, and several senior security officials in Dushanbe. The discussions focused on the need for greater coordination in managing border crossings, improving port operations, and establishing joint security mechanisms.

The visit follows months of efforts by the Taliban administration to build closer relations with Central Asian countries. Earlier, Balkh Governor Yusuf Wafa traveled to Dushanbe and met with Tajik officials.

At the same time, a high-level Tajik delegation recently visited capital Kabul and held talks with Afghan officials, including Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s acting foreign minister. Members of the Tajik delegation included officials from the foreign ministry, security agencies, and key government departments. Their talks centered on expanding political, economic, and security cooperation.
