NATO Weighs Pre-Emptive Strike Scenarios against Russia

DID Press: Head of NATO’s Military Committee revealed that alliance members are examining the possibility of pre-emptive action and “offensive responses” to Russian activities — a disclosure that comes as Vladimir Putin formally denies any plans for an attack on Europe.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone said NATO allies are considering “more active and offensive options” in response to Russia’s behavior. He stressed, however, that such scenarios are not NATO’s usual way of thinking or acting, and would be framed as defensive if ever adopted.

Russian officials have dismissed claims that Moscow intends to strike Europe, warning that NATO is “inflating the threat” to prepare its public for a potential military confrontation.

Putin said days earlier that Russia is ready to formally document its lack of any intention to attack Europe, calling Western accusations “fraudulent” or “unrealistic.”

Russian lawmakers and diplomats argue that NATO is using the war in Ukraine to strengthen its deterrence posture and pressure Russia, claiming the alliance has little interest in a peaceful settlement.

Meanwhile, Germany’s defense minister recently warned that Russia could threaten NATO states by 2029 — remarks the Kremlin has labeled as “fabricated.”
