Khalilzad Urges Stricter Oversight of Migrants with Military Backgrounds in US

DID Press: Former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Peace, Zalmay Khalilzad, warned that background checks and monitoring of migrants with military experience in the United States are insufficient, and security agencies must take immediate action to identify and manage potential threats.

Khalilzad said that recent incidents should serve as a serious wake-up call to review the vetting process and post-arrival monitoring of migrants with military training.

He noted that some responsible agencies in the U.S. see themselves as “ideological defenders of migrants,” while their primary duty is to protect society and provide impartial reporting on potential threats.

Khalilzad emphasized that the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, and other local authorities must be actively involved in this process, and legal measures—including possible deportation—should be implemented if warning signs emerge.
