UNAMA: Afghanistan Must Reintegrate into Int’l System
DID Press: Acting Head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on the sidelines of the Doha Forum that the UN is working to facilitate Afghanistan’s reintegration into the international system and ensure that the rights of all citizens are upheld without discrimination.

The annual Doha Forum 2025, held from December 6–8 in Qatar, brought together representatives from over 160 countries, including Taliban officials, with Afghanistan as a focal point on the agenda.
Georgette Gagnon, acting Head of UNAMA, emphasized that “our primary focus is assisting Afghanistan in reestablishing its place in the international system and ensuring adherence to global commitments.” She added that Afghanistan must become a stable and prosperous country where the rights of all citizens are respected.
Gagnon described the Doha Forum as a critical platform for dialogue between the Taliban and the international community, highlighting its potential to foster greater engagement and develop shared solutions to current challenges.
In recent months, UNAMA has focused not only on political issues but also on coordinating humanitarian assistance and supporting development initiatives in Afghanistan. Gagnon’s recent meetings with Taliban officials, including Amir Khan Muttaqi, addressed humanitarian concerns caused by border closures between Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as drug control issues.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Prime Minister of Qatar, noted on the forum’s sidelines that his country is working to reduce tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He said that Doha-hosted talks have resulted in a temporary ceasefire agreement between the two sides.
