UNICEF: 11M Afghan Children to Need Urgent Aid in 2026

DID Press: UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that Afghanistan is heading toward a deepening humanitarian crisis in 2026, with over 21 million people expected to need urgent aid — among them 11.6 million children.

In a newly released report, the agency says natural disasters, a fragile economy, shrinking protection mechanisms, and limited access to basic services have sharply intensified humanitarian needs across the country. UNICEF identifies women, children, adolescents, and marginalized groups as the most vulnerable segments of the population.

It also warns that restrictions on women and girls could have long-lasting, intergenerational consequences. At the same time, inadequate investment in water systems, healthcare, and basic infrastructure continues to worsen the situation.

UNICEF is requesting $949 million to deliver life-saving assistance — including healthcare, nutrition support, education, and access to clean drinking water — to 12 million people throughout Afghanistan in the coming year.
