US Envoy to UNSC: Taliban Not a Trustworthy Partner
DID Press: US representative at the UN Security Council delivered a sharp critique of the Taliban, stating that Washington’s priority remains reducing the threat of terrorist attacks originating from Afghanistan. He described the Taliban as an “unreliable partner” and held the group responsible for Afghanistan’s deep humanitarian crisis, persistent poverty, and ongoing instability.

Speaking at the latest UNSC session, US Representative Mike Waltz underscored the worsening security and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, emphasizing that the primary concern for Washington is the potential for terrorist threats emanating from Afghan territory that could endanger US interests and its allies. In strongly worded remarks, he said: “The Taliban is not a trustworthy partner in international relations, and there is no indication of credible adherence to its commitments.”
Waltz criticized the Taliban’s governance, noting that Afghans continue to suffer from structural problems including high unemployment, severe poverty, and limited access to basic services—conditions he attributed to the Taliban’s “ineffective policies and restrictive decisions.” He added that the group’s disregard for citizens’ essential needs has prolonged the humanitarian crisis, with no clear plan in place to alleviate public suffering.
He further accused the Taliban of continuing a policy of “hostage-taking,” an issue repeatedly raised by both the United States and international organizations.
The remarks came as representatives from several other countries—including Pakistan, France, India, and China—also voiced criticism of the Taliban during the same session, calling for the formation of an inclusive government, respect for women’s rights, and decisive action against terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan.
The US statement indicates that the gap between the Taliban and the international community has not narrowed; instead, growing concerns over regional security and the humanitarian crisis have widened the divide.
