UK Ties UN-Backed Aid to End of Taliban’s “Barbaric” Restrictions

DID Press: The United Kingdom, speaking at an event coinciding with International Human Rights Day, issued a forceful condemnation of the Taliban’s escalating violations of women’s and girls’ rights in Afghanistan. British officials urged the international community to unite against the Taliban’s repressive policies and warned that London’s continued support for the UN-led process hinges on “meaningful actions” by the group—especially in the areas of women’s rights and counterterrorism.

According to assessments presented during the session, more than four years into Taliban rule, the group has issued over 100 restrictive decrees targeting women. These include the ban on education for girls above the age of 12, prohibitions on women working in UN offices, and severe constraints on movement, employment, and public life. The UK stressed that these “barbaric rules” must be abolished immediately, noting that British officials raised these demands directly with Taliban representatives during a recent visit to Kabul.

London also underscored the need to strengthen the UN’s role in advancing Afghanistan’s political and humanitarian pathways. The UK called for the swift appointment of a UN Special Envoy, arguing that the position is essential for coherent international engagement and for ensuring adherence to human rights standards.

The statement concluded by reaffirming that “without the presence and security of women, peace, stability, and prosperity are impossible”—principles that the UK asserts must form the foundation of Afghanistan’s future.
