Australia Welcomes Unity of Afghan Anti-Taliban Parties

DID Press: Australia’s special representative for Afghanistan has welcomed the announcement of a unified coalition among Afghan political parties and movements opposing the Taliban, describing it as a positive step toward national sovereignty, democratic governance, and the protection of human rights.

Amanda McGregor highlighted that it is encouraging to see Afghan political groups coming together around fundamental principles for the country’s future, achieved through internal negotiations. These principles include national sovereignty, democratic governance, and the full realization of human rights, particularly for women and girls.

She emphasized the importance of active female participation in these coalitions, adding, “We hope to see the formation of more alliances, especially with effective involvement of women’s groups.”

The remarks followed an online gathering titled “National Unity of Afghan Political Parties and Movements.” During the meeting, the High Council of Resistance for Afghanistan, the National Resistance Front, the National Assembly for Afghanistan’s Salvation, and the National Peace and Justice Movement issued a joint statement.

The statement underscored resolving Afghanistan’s crisis through internal dialogue and negotiation, called for a sustainable peace and the establishment of a legitimate, inclusive system based on the people’s will, and emphasized respect for human rights — particularly the rights of women, ethnic and religious minorities — along with transparent management of humanitarian assistance.
