Hundreds of US Police Hunting Gunman After Shooting at Brown University

DID Press: Hundreds of US law enforcement officers are searching for the suspect behind a deadly shooting at Brown University, where two people were killed and at least nine others injured, authorities said.

The shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon local time during exam hours inside a university building in Providence, Rhode Island, prompting a full campus lockdown.

Local officials said that eight hours after the attack, the gunman remained at large. Around 400 police officers, including FBI agents and campus police, were deployed across the university grounds and surrounding streets.

Providence’s mayor said eight of the injured are in critical but stable condition, while another person was hospitalized after being struck by shrapnel.

Police released a 10-second video clip in an effort to identify the suspect, showing an individual fleeing rapidly along a quiet street after the shooting. Authorities said the attack took place in a ground-floor classroom.

Brown University President Christina Paxson confirmed that 10 of the 11 victims were students. Witnesses described scenes of panic as gunfire erupted. One student told the university’s student newspaper that they abandoned their belongings and ran to a dormitory for safety.

The incident is the latest in a series of mass shootings at US educational institutions. According to the Gun Violence Archive, more than 300 mass shootings have been recorded in the United States since the beginning of this year, once again intensifying the debate over gun control legislation.
