DID Press: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv has decided to stop pursuing its request to join NATO and will instead prioritize obtaining security guarantees from the United States, Europe, and other international partners.

Zelensky described this shift in approach as “a kind of compromise” by Ukraine, stating that although NATO membership has always been the country’s primary strategic goal, the current conditions of war and geopolitical considerations have pushed Kyiv toward alternative options.
According to the Ukrainian president, credible and practical security guarantees could play a deterrent role against external threats in the short term; however, Kyiv still views NATO membership as the best long-term security framework for its future.
These remarks come as NATO expansion and Ukraine’s security future remain among the central points of tension between Russia and the West.
