Taliban Establish Independent Oil and Gas Authority, Launch $15M Fuel Hub in Mazar-e-Sharif
DID Press: Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada approved the establishment of an Independent Oil and Gas Authority, consolidating previously fragmented activities in the sector, while construction has begun on a $15 million fuel trade center in Mazar-e-Sharif city to improve fuel production, imports, and distribution across Afghanistan.

According to officials, the new authority aims to enhance transparency, coordination, and efficiency in the oil and gas sector. Authorities say the move will have a tangible impact on investors, consumers, and the broader public by streamlining oversight and regulation.
At the same time, the cornerstone was laid for a major petroleum trade complex in Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province. The market, which previously operated at the Hairatan border port, has been relocated to the city with a reported investment of $15 million.
Officials said the relocation is intended to improve quality control, prevent price manipulation, and facilitate commercial operations. Local authorities and traders welcomed the move, noting that it is expected to reduce transportation costs, improve logistics, and ensure timely fuel supply to markets.
