EU Warns Afghanistan’s Water Crisis Requires Urgent Global Action

DID Press: European Union has warned that widespread contamination of water sources in Afghanistan is threatening the health of millions of people, calling on the international community to take immediate and coordinated action.

The EU said the drinking water crisis in Afghanistan is worsening, with extensive water pollution posing a serious risk to public health. According to EU assessments, more than 20 million people in the country lack access to safe drinking water, while over 80 percent of the population relies on contaminated sources.

The rise in waterborne diseases has become a major public health emergency. UNICEF reports that more than 212,000 Afghan children are suffering from illnesses linked to unsafe water, while the World Health Organization has recorded over 9,000 similar cases.

The European Union has urged the international community to act swiftly to contain the water crisis in Afghanistan. Afghan authorities, however, have so far not issued an official response to the warnings.

Experts warned the crisis is placing severe strain on public health and living conditions, warning that without urgent intervention, the humanitarian and health consequences will continue to escalate.
