Iran Extends Afghan Family Passports Until June 2026
DID Press: Iran’s Head of the Center for Foreign Nationals and Migrants Affairs, Nader Yarahmadi, announced the extension of Afghan family passports’ validity until June 2026. Holders are required to apply for separate passports for each family member.

Yarahmadi noted that under the Foreign Nationals Management Plan, about 1.6 million undocumented Afghan nationals have left Iran since the beginning of the year. Currently, around 4.5 million Afghans remain in the country, with the total including the transient population reaching roughly five million.
He added that irregular border entries were low until August but have increased significantly since then. While some deported Afghans have returned, authorities aim to control the flow and prevent it from becoming a security and social challenge.
Yarahmadi also highlighted the status of census cards, whose validity expired on March 20, 2025. Holders were required to visit service offices starting April 1, 2025, for processing, with priority given to single individuals and families with school-age children after the academic year.
Of over two million cardholders, about half have completed the process and exited the country. Temporary residence permits have been granted to some, including those married to Iranian citizens or at risk upon return.
