US Approves Largest Arms Package in History for Taiwan

DID Press: US on Wednesday announced approval of an $11.1 billion arms package for Taiwan, marking the second-largest U.S. weapons sale to the island since Donald Trump returned to the White House, amid rising military and diplomatic pressure from China.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense said the package includes eight types of advanced equipment, such as HIMARS missile systems, howitzer artillery, Javelin anti-tank missiles, Altius loitering munitions drones, and components for other weapons platforms.

A statement from the ministry emphasized that the U.S. continues to help Taiwan maintain adequate defensive capabilities and develop a rapid and robust deterrent force, which it described as fundamental to regional stability and peace.

The package is currently being notified to the U.S. Congress, where lawmakers have the opportunity to block or modify it, although arms sales to Taiwan enjoy broad bipartisan support.

In a separate statement, the Pentagon said the sales aim to modernize Taiwan’s armed forces and preserve “credible defensive capabilities,” aligning with U.S. national, economic, and security interests.
