Tajikistan Submits Military Equipment Request to Strengthen Afghanistan Border

DID Press: Tajikistan prepared a list of weapons and equipment needed to bolster security along its border with Afghanistan and submitted it to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) for review.

Pavel Serkisian, an adviser at the CSTO Secretariat, confirmed that Tajikistan’s submission is currently being evaluated by member states. The initiative is part of an intergovernmental program approved in 2024, which plans to strengthen Tajikistan–Afghanistan border security over a five-year period starting in 2025.

The move comes in response to recent attacks originating from Afghan territory that killed five Chinese nationals. The office of the Tajik presidency had previously confirmed the incidents and ordered a review of border security conditions.

Historically, Russia had been responsible for guarding Tajikistan’s borders through its bases and border forces until the early 2000s. Since 2005, however, Tajikistan has independently managed its border security.
