Muttaqi: Afghanistan “Graveyard of Empires”
DID Press: Taliban administration’s acting foreign minister, marking the anniversary of the Soviet invasion, described the occupation of Afghanistan as a “major mistake” by three historical powers and said the country has consistently shown unity and resistance against foreign forces.

Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the Soviet invasion, Amir Khan Muttaqi said the occupation of Afghanistan by three major powers was the result of internal deception and the role of infiltrators, adding that their eventual defeat should serve as a lesson for outsiders. He stressed that the failures not only ended the military presence of occupying forces but also damaged their global credibility.
Muttaqi further described Afghanistan as the “graveyard of empires,” saying the Afghan people’s resistance to various challenges—including recent tensions with some neighboring countries—demonstrates internal unity and solidarity among Afghans both inside and outside the country.
