EU Reaffirms Support for Somalia’s Territorial Integrity

DID Press: EU emphasized the need to respect the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, following Israel’s December 26 decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state.

In a statement, the EU said that preserving Somalia’s territorial integrity — in line with the country’s constitution as well as the charters of the African Union and the United Nations — is essential for peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

The bloc warned that any move undermining Somalia’s sovereignty and cohesion could have negative consequences for regional security and stability.

The statement further called on both Somaliland and the Federal Government of Somalia to resolve their longstanding disputes through meaningful and constructive dialogue, and to pursue peaceful solutions.
